Box Core
Box cores recover a large volume of the uppermost sediments on the seabed with minimal disturbance. The sampling box can be detached and moved for subsampling. SEASAM has three sizes of box cores. Box core frames could be modified to attach imaging equipment if needed, which is commonly employed for ferromanganese nodule density assessments.
Note that maximum sample length is dependent on substrate, most mud to muddy-sand substrates produce ~30-50 cm long cores. Please reach out to us to discuss whether your sediment-water interface and shallow substrate science goals are best served through box or multi-coring.

| Coring Device | Sampling Footprint | Max Length of Sample | Approximate Coring Device Weight |
| Box Core (large) | 50 cm x 50 cm | 55 cm | 1400 lbs |
| Box Core (small) | 30 cm x 20 cm | 60 cm | 1000 lbs |
| Soutar Core | 30 cm x 30 cm | 90 cm | 1570 lbs |
